The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) represents an important ad
vance in the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, but infection has remain
ed a serious complication of device implantation. Fungal infections associa
ted with these devices are uncommon, with only 4 cases previously reported.
We describe a case of ICD-associated endocarditis caused by Candida albica
ns that was successfully treated with complete device explantation and prol
onged antifungal therapy, and we review the features of ICD-related fungal
infections.
