Noise reduction in double-layered perpendicular recording media with a thic
k soft magnetic backlayer was studied. Although the medium noise was increa
sed with the backlayer, the noise for quaternary alloy films could be subst
antially reduced by introducing a certain intermediate layer between the al
loy layer and the backlayer. The double-layered medium obtained exhibited a
waveform with sharp transitions as well as a low noise property when recor
ded with a single pole head. The recording performances suggested the poten
tial of the medium for a high areal density recording around 50 Gbit/in(2).
