A set of Co-CoO metal evaporated tapes were prepared with various O-2 flow
rates. Recording tests determined the optimum flow rate and a second set of
tapes were prepared at that flow rate with thickness from 33 mn to 103 mn.
For thinner tapes the recording carrier to noise ratio is increased while
the optimum recording current reduced. Remanence coercivity at 2 ns is abou
t 30% higher than at 100 s and is independent of the thickness. Thermal sta
bility is excellent down to the thinnest tape where KV/kT is still 170.
