Abstract
We have used a focused ion beam to directly pattern thin- film granular per pendicular Co70Cr18Pt12 media. By cutting trenches similar to6 nm deep in t he similar to 20 mn media, we have produced square arrays of magnetically i solated islands with periods in the range 65-500 mn. At periods below simil ar to 130 mn we observe only single magnetic domains, which exhibit a rough "checker-board" pattern of upon ac demagnetization. We have patterned at d ensities of over 140 Gbit/in(2).
