Abstract
The paper describes a response surface methodology (RSM) as an efficient ap proach to parametric model building and design optimization. Finite element analysis and RSM using mixed resolution central composite designs are util ized to determine the optimum torque performance of spindle motors. The eff ectiveness of the RSM is highlighted in the design of a four-factor three-l evel central composite rotatable design matrix for planing, conduction, exe cution and development of mathematical models. With the help of the analysi s of variance and response surface plots, the optimal setting of design par ameters is achieved for desired product quality.
