The oxidation behavior of iron aluminides was investigated in various envir
onments at 900 to 1200 degreesC. The effect of water vapor on total specime
n mass gain was minimal, At 1000 and 1100 degreesC. the mass gain of Fe-28a
t.%Al-5Cr without Zr was a factor of 2 or more higher in air than in oxygen
or Ar-20%O-2 Nitride formation beneath the external Al2O3 layer was observ
ed in air. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
