Abstract
The synthesis of WSi2 and WSi2-x vol.%Nb and WSi2-y vol.%ZrO2 composites wi th x, y=0, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 20 by field activated combustion was inves tigated. Self-propagating synthesis fronts can be initiated above minimum ( threshold) values which depended on the amount of added Nb and ZrO2. Reacti on wave velocities had a direct dependence on the applied field and on the amount of the second phase. XRD results showed the presence of the WSi2 pha se in all systems with the additional phase of Nb or ZrO2 for the composite s. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
