New organic electro-optic and nonlinear optical material, N-(2-chlorophenyl
)-(1-propanamide) has been synthesized by the standard method. The synthesi
zed material is purified by repeated crystallization. Single crystals of N-
(2-chlorophenyl)-(1-propanamide) were grown by the slow evaporation techniq
ue. The grown crystals were transparent and were of optimum dimensions (20
x 5 x 5 mm(3)). The grown crystals were characterized by UV-Vis, IR, NMR an
d powder XRD techniques. The second harmonic generators (SHG) signal was de
tected by employing fluorescence spectroscope. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.
