Abstract
The compound gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) was found in extracts from samples o f unadulterated wines. This finding indicates that GBL is a naturally occur ring component in some wines and may be present in similar products. The co ncentration detected was approximately 5 mug/mL and was easily observed usi ng a simple extraction technique followed by GUMS analysis. These results i llustrate the need to carefully examine an allegedly adulterated sample's m atrix before determining a sample was laced with GBL.
