Improved cross-directional (CD) control of paper machines can result i
n significant reductions in material consumption, greater production r
ates for existing equipment, improved product quality, and elimination
of product rejects. Addressing all of the important characteristics o
f CD control within the computational constraints is a challenging pro
blem. A cross-directional control algorithm is developed which directl
y addresses actuator limitations in an efficient manner while having a
controller structure proven to be robust to model inaccuracies.
