The effect of Co substitution on coercivity (H-C) and Fe-57 hyperfine param
eters of mechanically alloyed SmFe11-xCoxTi (x less than or equal to2) were
systematically studied. H-C exhibits a maximum at 1123 K resulting from th
e competition between surface defect effect and domain size. It is shown fr
om the isomer shift (delta) assigned on the basis of Wigner-Seitz cell volu
mes that Co atoms occupy preferentially 8f sites of the ThMn12-type structu
re. The mean hyperfine field (B-HF) increases with substitution. (C) 2001 E
