R. Delmas et al., SEARCHING FOR CLUSTER DECAY OF TH-232 - A CHEMICAL-SEPARATION SCHEME FOR NA-24 FROM THORIUM, Radiochimica Acta, 76(4), 1997, pp. 181-184
Spontaneous emission of neon clusters by Th-232 has been theoretically
predicted. 10 kg of thorium may contain a few tens Na-24 atoms, the d
ecay products of Ne-24. We have devised an ion-exchange separation sch
eme for microamounts of Na from large quantities of Th-232 and its dau
ghters. As a preliminary step, rests were performed with 10 g of Th an
d Na-22 tracer. After a 3 h separation, sodium was recovered on 0.2 g
of sorbent, with a yield greater than 97%. Decontamination factors are
greater than 10(6) for Th and 10(5) for its radioactive daughters.
