Implementation of the adiabatic rapid passage scheme using two chirped puls
es in a three-state A system, where the final state is a manifold of closel
y spaced levels is proposed. We show how for a proper choice of pulse param
eters the method can either select a single level or a superposition state
in the manifold. The efficiency, robustness, and potential use of both poss
ibilities are explored.
