Because of the abundance of hyaluronan in skin, interest was early foc used on variation in the content of the polysaccharide in various path ological conditions of this tissue. A large amount of early work utili zed histological techniques of insufficient specificity but recent dev elopments of specific analytical and staining methods for hyaluronan h ave supplied new data on its presence and possible role in skin disord ers.
