The influence of different doping ions on the emission and scintillation ch
aracteristics of PbWO4 scintillator was studied. In the case of Ce3+ doping
, efficient non-radiative recombination at Ce3+ sites takes place resulting
in a lower light yield and faster luminescence and scintillation response.
Th4+ doping shows all the positive features of trivalent ion doping used p
reviously for PbWO4 scintillator optimisation. Heavily La3+ and Gd3+ doped
PbWO4 crystals (up to several molar percent) a suppressed light yield and s
ubnanosecond scintillation response. Finally, Tb3+ and Pr3+ doping results
in dominant emission lines at 543 and 602 mn with decay times of about 650
