Advances in tumor technology and gene transfer technology have provide
d several new methods for treating colorectal cancer. These new approa
ches are based on a more thorough understanding of the molecular aspec
ts of the disease. New tumor vaccines that are engineered to activate
specific immune mechanisms are now being tested in clinical trials. Ge
ne transfer technologies allow for the expression of a variety of gene
s within tumors that may be of therapeutic potential. These issues are
discussed in the context of prior and existing methods of treating co
lorectal cancer.
