The surface layers formed on quenched and tempered 40HM (0.4C-Cr-Mo) steel
by nitriding (chemical and phase composition being a result of base metal a
lloying) and by deposition of TiN (layer, totally different from core) prod
uced the complex effect on corrosion and hydrogen action. The correlation b
etween the rate of general and pitting corrosion, the hydrogen uptake and t
ransport with the different stages of the stress corrosion cracking have be
en discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
