Abstract
We overview in short a series of experimental investigations of polyethylen e, glass containing K2O and borosilicate glass exposed to hard gamma radiat ion and neutron beams in order to study a radiation response of these mater ials especially in view of their application as detectors of gamma and neut ron radiation dosimetry. The results of current works are also mentioned in which optical properties of scintillators and light guides loaded with hig h energy particles are investigated. As a consequence, some useful practica l recommendations for optimum application of such materials are put forward . (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
