This paper deals with the influence of nitrogen ion implantation on the val
ues of the friction coefficient and wear of tool steel. The friction coeffi
cient and wear of samples were found to decrease with the dose increase of
nitrogen ions implanted at 60 keV. Improvement of tribological properties w
as obtained with the energy increase to 120 keV with nitrogen ions introduc
ed into the sample. Polyenergetic implantation was used for one sample so a
s to obtain an even concentration of nitrogen atoms in the whole modified l
ayer and this gave the best tribological results. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science
