The influence of surface heterogeneity of an insulating film on its ex
oelectron emission is investigated. It is shown experimentally that th
e thermally stimulated exoemission spectra of control samples and samp
les irradiated for the purpose of creating local regions with a higher
electrical conductivity are substantially different, even though the
combined surface area of the regions of the film having an irradiation
-modified structure comprises an insignificant fraction of the total s
urface area of the film. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
