Abstract
This article describes how African American women community college student s portray their attempts to achieve upward social mobility via college atte ndance. We focus in particular on the role of interpersonal relationships i n this process. All kinds of supportive relationships are seen as important , but unsupportive friends and faculty are generally ignored. However, unsu pportive family members present real obstacles to the ability and desires o f these women to achieve their educational goals.
