Machine learning in computer vision

In this editorial we briefly discuss interaction between two important area s of artificial intelligence: computer vision (CV) and machine learning ( M L). Although the two fields have a long-standing tradition and can be consi dered technologically mature, past research in applying ML techniques to CV problems has been limited. After a short introduction in the fields of com puter vision and machine learning, we highlight some important issues in th e intersection of the two areas and sketch both current achievements and fu ture research directions. Our goal is to help the reader put the six contri butions of this special issue into the proper context.
