Tuberculosis was detected in seven geese at the breeding unit of the Facult
y of Veterinary Medicine, Kafkas University, during 1998. In the necropsy,
lesions of nodular type were seen in the liver, spleen, and lungs. Histopat
hologically, the lesions were characterized by central areas of caseous nec
rosis surrounded by epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells, lymphocy
tes, and an outer fibrous capsule. Acid-fast bacilli were visualized by the
Ziehl-Neelsen staining method in paraffin sections and smears. Inoculation
into Lowenstein-Jensen media with glycerin yielded Mycobacterium spp.
