Abstract
Several of the factors that are currently promoting or inhibiting the devel
opment and use of clinical practice guidelines are reviewed. While many fac
tors are moving the field toward the use of guidelines, a great deal remain
s to be learned about how to disseminate empirical knowledge through this m
eans.
