Pheochromocytoma is a rare adrenal tumor that occurs in various species. Cl
inical signs are often intermittent and vague and can be the result of cate
cholamine release or invasion of the tumor into surrounding structures. Abn
ormalities in routine laboratory tests are usually nonspecific but can be u
sed to rule out concurrent disease. The optimal therapy for pheochromocytom
a is surgery; medical therapy is used for nonresectable or metastatic disea
se. Prognosis is guarded; however, long-term survival is possible for dogs
with uncomplicated disease.
