Abstract
The deeper logic of the so-called 'Gretchen tragedy' only becomes visible w hen the events are investigated int he context of the European epic system. Margarete's guilt, as well as the guilt of her typological precursors (Med ea, Dido, Eve) cannot be solved without considering the role of the man in what happens, including the killing of the child.
