Abstract
In spinach thylakoids, the quenching of the singlet excited state in the ph otosystem II antenna by iii-dinitrobenzene does not change the rate of the light induced degradation of the DI reaction centre protein and offers only limited protection against photoinhibition itself. These results are discu ssed in terms of the role of non-photochemical quenching as a photoprotecti ve strategy. (C) 2001 Federation of European Biochemical Societies.
