We report a 72 years old woman on regular hemodialysis, with secondary
hy perparathyroidism, who experienced two episodes of acute hemolysis
complicated by pancreatitis during the dialysis procedure. In both ep
isodes hemolysis was of moderate intensity with neither associated car
diovascular instability nor consumption coagulopathy. Acute pancreatit
is was diagnosed with peak amylase levels reaching 5,000 UI/L but rapi
dly falling to normal within 48-72 hours, after resolution of the hemo
lytic process. Hemolysis-associated pancreatitis has been previously d
escribed in the medical literature. The case we report does not presen
t the hemodynamic and coagulation complications usually involved in th
e development of pancreatitis in suchs cases.
