The chronic renal failure patient with diabetes mellitus is at increased ri
sk for significant foot complications, including amputation. Understanding
the pathogenesis of diabetic foot ulcer development leads to early recognit
ion of risk factors allowing timely therapeutic intervention and prevention
. Interrupting the causal pathway to foot ulcer development is the key to s
aving the diabetic foot. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesi
s, evaluation, treatment, and prevention of diabetic foot ulcers.
