Kinetics and mechanism of the disproportionation of MnO4- via [CMC-(MnO42-)
-O-VI I intermediate complex formation during the oxidation of carboxymethy
l cellulose (CMC) polysaccharide have been investigated spectrophotometrica
lly at pH greater than or equal to 12 and various temperatures ( 15-35 degr
eesC). The rate law was suggested as Rate = k(obs)MnO(4)(-) I Kinetic and s
pectrophotometric measurements revealed the formation of hypomanganate(V) a
nd manganate(VI) transient species, which are base-catalyzed, A mechanism w
as postulated that is consistent with the experimental data. (C) 2001 John
