This study investigates the relationship between certain variables that are
specific to people with physical disabilities and loneliness. The sample i
s made up of 39 adults with visible physical disabilities. The variables me
asured are physical independence, level of impairment, acceptance of disabi
lity, as well as social skills and anxiety related to handicap situations.
Correlational analysis suggests that among the variables examined, physical
independence, as well as social skills and social anxiety related to situa
tions where disability is involved, are associated with loneliness. These d
ata may help identify people with physical disabilities who are at risk for
experiencing loneliness, target more efficient intervention objectives and
develop strategies for optimizing social integration.
