The fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, has been used as a model euka
ryote to study processes such as the cell cycle and cell morphology. In thi
s single-celled organism, growing in a straight line and maintaining the nu
cleus in the centre of the cell depend on intracellular positional informat
ion. Microtubules and microtubular transport are important for generating p
ositional information within the fission yeast cell, and these molecular me
chanisms are also probably relevant for generating positional information i
n other eukaryotic cells.
