Rk. Chandolia et al., EFFECTS OF TRILOSTANE, AN INHIBITOR OF 3-BETA-HYDROXYSTEROID DEHYDROGENASE, ON THE ONSET AND DURATION OF PARTURITION IN SOWS AND GILTS, Canadian journal of animal science, 77(2), 1997, pp. 331-333
On day 113 of gestation, 31 of 62 sows received an oral dose (750 mg s
ow(-1)) of trilostane, an inhibitor of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydroge
nase. All sows received an injection of PGF(2 alpha) 3 h later. The on
set of farrowing in trilostane treated sows was earlier than controls
(25.7 vs. 28.8 h; P < 0.05) and more sows farrowed during the normal w
orking day (83.9 vs. 64.5%). This effect was due to a decrease in prog
esterone concentration with no adverse effect on piglets or sows.
