Abstract
For the first time different high energy microanalysis techniques were comb ined to characterise individual micrometer sized radioactive particles, It was shown that particle characteristics including weathering rates and mobi lisation of associated radionuclides are source specific and release-scenar io dependent. Fuel particles released during the explosion are characterise d by UO2-cores with surrounding laver of reduced U with low weathering rate s. In contrast. fuel particles released during the subsequent fire show UO2 -core with surrounding layers of oxidised U2O5, U3O8 with high weathering r ates (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
