Double pion production in the reaction N-14 + d --> O-16* + 2 pi has been i
nvestigated 99 MeV above the 2 pi (0) threshold in the center-of-mass frame
by recoil detection. Upper limits (2 standard deviations) to the different
ial cross sections for producing O-16 in a particle-stable state and pion p
airs in the invariant mass range of 270 to 310 MeV/c(2), d sigma /d Omega (
0 degrees)(c.m.) < 1.7 nb/sr and d<sigma>/d Omega (180 degrees)(c.m.)< 1.3
nb/sr, were obtained. For invariant masses above 310 MeV/c(2) an upper limi
t to the cross section of 7 nb was obtained, assuming a constant production
matrix element.
