The possibility of shortening the braking distance by the application of an
additional driving torque linked to a control mechanism working with an AB
S system is investigated in this work. In the ABS control cycle., the reacc
eleration of the locking wheels is provided only by decreasing the braking
pressure. An external tractive torque can be used to shorten the time for a
cceleration during the phase of lowering of the braking pressure. The engin
e of the vehicle or an additional electric motor could be used as a source
of external tractive force. The possibility of decreasing the braking dista
nce by such a system is investigated by using a mathematical model. The eff
ect of the additional accelerating torque is analysed with a simulation mod
el and it is concluded that an increase of up to 10 per cent in braking dis
tance may be obtained.
