Abstract
The crack growth rate under a purely thermal stress driving force is n umerically computed on a typical first wall geometry. The results obta ined are compared with the experimental data of an ad hoc thermal fati gue test. The crack growth rate was decreased by the crack branching a nd by the presence of other minor cracks nucleated close to the main o ne. Therefore, the numerical evaluation proved to be conservative with respect to the experimental results. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
