This paper describes an in-bone employment program for people with a m
ental illness. Work tasks were brought into the homes of people with m
ental illness who completed them at their own rate. When compared with
individuals in a cross-matched control program, participants demonstr
ated significant improvement in self-esteem, while participation in th
e program increased the likelihood of participating in other work prog
rams. As well as providing a satisfying and rewarding activity, in-hom
e employment is a cost-effective way of preparing for participation in
other community work programs. It may be especially valuable in board
ing homes and homes for people who are elderly.
