Laparoscopic approaches to vertical banded gastroplasty, gastric banding, g
astric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion are relatively new minimally i
nvasive approaches to standard bariatric operations. Early results suggest
that they are technically feasible, safe, and yield significant improvement
in perioperative morbidity and recovery Weight loss results are comparable
to open operations. Laparoscopic bariatric surgery, however, is technicall
y challenging and requires advanced training.
