Over the past 4 years the FAST (Finnsugar Applexion Separation Technology)
separation technology has brought the chromatographic separation of molasse
s a big step forward. The 2-profile FAST technology offers up to 100% bette
r column efficiency than the classical single profile SMB technologies. The
better efficiency can be used to enhance separation results like product p
urity and product recovery or it can simply be used to enhance throughput.
The system is easy to retrofit into existing installations. New installatio
ns are possible to be built with significantly reduced resin inventory and
therefore also significantly lower investment.
This paper compares the performance of the 2-profile FAST technology to oth
er existing systems and reviews the most recent projects in the world. Upgr
ading possibilities for classical SMB-systems are outlined.
