Are units of retention necessary?

Hull et al. propose a set of features that can be used to identify explanat ory systems as being selectionist, The commentary questions the necessity o f identifying a unit of retention at the level of behavior-environment inte ractions. It is concluded that an answer to the question "Are units of rete ntion necessary?" can only be given in light a clear statement of the goals of a science of behavior.
