The O-specific polysaccharide of the marine bacterium "Alteromonas marinogl
utinosa" NCIMB 1770 was obtained by mild acid degradation of the correspond
ing lipopolysaccharide and found to contain D-galactose, N-acetyl-D-glucosa
mine, and N-acetyl-D-mannosamine residues in equimolar ratio. Based on meth
ylation analysis, periodate oxidation, and C-13-NMR spectroscopy data of na
tive and modified polysaccharides, the following structure of the trisaccha
ride repeating unit of the O-specific polysaccharide was established:
