Following and archaeological and archaeometric study of the 4th century pot
tery on Thasos, laboratory research was carried out in a regional framework
, with the assistance of the Ephorates concerned, on samples from the sites
of Amphipolis, Abderam, Mesembria-Zoni, Maroneia and Samothrace. The resul
ts thus obtained in a particular region and at a precise period serve as th
e basis for a more general set of problems. We attempt to show to what exte
nt this type of approach can lead to a better understanding of the craftsme
n and of the techniques used for manufacturing black-glaze pottery, as well
as common and cooking pottery.
