On 21 May 2001, an adult male Hypsugo savii was found at Zabcice, 20 km sou
th of Brno and 90 km north of Vienna at 49 degrees 00'N, 16 degrees 35'E (a
ltitude 180 m). The bat was unable to fly due to a broken forearm. It has b
een preserved as a museum specimen in the collection of the Faculty of Scie
nce, Masaryk University, Brno. This is the first reliable record of the spe
cies in the territories of both the present Czech Republic and the former C
zechoslovakia. It is probable that the individual found at Zabcice was an a
ctive immigrant or a member of a local, hitherto unknown population. If the
records of H. savii in England and northern Germany concern vagrants or pa
ssively transported animals, the present finding may represent the northern
most point of the species' distribution in Europe.
