Abstract
To examine the antioxidant effect of bilirubin (BR) on leukocyte, we treate d leukocytes obtained from healthy subjects with an oxidant and various con centrations of BR. High concentrations of BR decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and catalase activities, increased superoxide d ismutase (SOD) activity, but had no effect on glutathione (GSH) concentrati on. Our results showed that under physiological conditions, BR has an antio xidant effect only in high concentrations. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. A ll rights reserved.
