In 1962, Kleinert and Kasden performed the first successful revascularizati
on of an incompletely amputated thumb. This was followed, in 1965, by Komat
su and Tamai, who performed the first successful replantation of a thumb. S
ince then, microsurgery has helped to solve a wide variety of difficult sur
gical problems and achieve a more functional and cosmetically acceptable di
git. These problems include ring avulsions, distal finger amputations, and
degloved skin.
