The transmutation of nuclear waste I-129 in the subcritical system was stud
ied in the present work using both theoretical and experimental methods. In
the experiment, the energetic proton beam (1.0 GeV) form accelerator was u
sed to bombard a thick lead target. And the long-lived nuclear waste I-129
was transmuted to Xe-130 by the spallation neutrons generated in the target
. The transmutation efficiency of I-129 was compared with theoretical simul
ation. And the transmutation in an Accelerator-Driven Subcritical Fast Reac
tor (ADSFR) was explored with the experimental results. The spent fuel of P
WR (Pressured Water Reactor) is assumed to be used as the fuel in ADSFR. Th
e liquid lead was chosen as target and coolant in the ADS.
