A dual approach integrating structural tailoring and adaptive material
s technology and designed to control the dynamic response of cantileve
r beams subjected to external excitations is presented. Whereas struct
ural tailoring uses the anisotropy properties of advanced composite ma
terials, adaptive materials technology exploits the actuating capabili
ties of piezoelectric materials bonded or embedded into the host struc
ture, A control law relating the piezoelectrically induced boundary be
nding moment with the velocity at given points of the structure is imp
lemented and its effect on the closed-loop frequencies and dynamic res
ponse to harmonic excitations is investigated. The combination of stru
ctural tailoring and control by means of adaptive materials proves ver
y effective in damping out vibration.
