The hydrogenation of carbon monoxide was carried out over palladium ca
talysts prepared by a novel preparation method using water-in-oil micr
oemulsion. Their catalytic performance was compared with that of the c
atalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method. The size di
stribution of the palladium particles prepared by the microemulsion me
thod was remarkably narrow, and the average particle size was much sma
ller than that prepared by the impregnation method. The catalysts prep
ared by the microemulsion method were found to exhibit a much higher a
ctivity for the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide than the catalysts pr
epared by impregnation.
