The C-13(alpha ,n)O-16 reaction is studied in a microscopic multicluster mo
del, where the C-13 and O-16 nuclei are described by a tetrahedral structur
e involving 3 alpha + n and 4 alpha clusters, respectively. The model provi
des a good description of the O-17 spectrum near the C-13 + alpha threshold
. We focus on the 1/2(2)(+) subthreshold state which essentially determines
the low-energy C-13(alpha, n)O-16 S-factor. The present result is consiste
nt with a previous microscopic calculation and confims the lowenergy enhanc
ement. The analysis is complemented by an investigation of the O-16(n, gamm
a)O-17 and O-16(p, gamma)F-17 reactions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All
